Ammonius Grammaticus

Ammonius Grammaticus

?

Ammonius Grammaticus is the conventional name attached to a Greek lexicon "On Similar and Different Words" (Peri homoion kai diaphoron lexeon), which distinguishes synonyms and near-synonyms in classical Greek. The work, transmitted under this name, draws heavily on earlier Atticist lexicography. The Ammonius behind it is shadowy and probably late antique; the surviving text appears to be a reworked compilation, and scholars have long debated whether it should instead be linked to Herennius Philo of Byblos. He is known essentially for this one lexical treatise.
