Cebes
Cebes
?
Cebes of Thebes was a Greek philosopher of the late 5th and early 4th centuries BCE, a follower of Socrates. He is best known as one of the interlocutors in Plato's dialogue Phaedo, where he and his fellow Theban Simmias press Socrates with searching objections about the soul's immortality. Xenophon also lists him among Socrates' close companions. A famous allegorical work, the Tabula ("Tablet") of Cebes, was later attributed to him, but scholars regard it as a spurious composition of the Roman imperial period, so little survives that is securely his own.
