Chandragupta II

Chandragupta II (reigned c. 375-415), also known as Vikramaditya, was the Gupta emperor under whom the empire reached its cultural and political golden age. He extended Gupta power into western India by defeating the Western Kshatrapas, gaining access to the ports of the Arabian Sea and their trade. His reign is remembered for a flourishing of Sanskrit literature, science, and art, traditionally associated with figures such as the poet Kalidasa, and was witnessed by the visiting Chinese Buddhist pilgrim Faxian, who described a prosperous and well-governed land.
