Diogenianus of Heraclea

Diogenianus of Heraclea

?

Diogenianus of Heraclea was a Greek grammarian usually placed in the 2nd century CE, often associated with the reign of Hadrian, though this date is an inference rather than a securely attested fact. He compiled a large alphabetical lexicon (later abridged by Hesychius of Alexandria) and a collection of proverbs (paroemiae) drawn from earlier, more comprehensive paroemiographic work. His proverb collection survives in epitomized form and became an important source for later Byzantine compilers, including the lexicon known as the Suda. Which city named Heraclea he came from — possibly Heraclea Pontica — is not fully secure.
