Dioscurides Pedianus
? · Anazarbus
Pedanius Dioscorides was a Greek physician, pharmacologist, and botanist who lived in the first century CE, originally from Anazarbus in Cilicia (in Roman Asia Minor). He served, by tradition, as a physician with the Roman army, which let him travel widely and observe plants and remedies across the empire. He is celebrated for his great work "De materia medica" (On Medical Material), a systematic five-book encyclopedia of medicinal plants, animal products, and minerals. It became the foundational pharmacological reference of the Western and Islamic worlds for well over a millennium.
