Apries (Haaibre)

Apries (Haaibre)

589 BCE570 BCE · Late-Period

Apries (throne-name Haaibre) was a Saite king of Dynasty 26 in the Late Period, reigning around 589-570 BCE, whose Levantine policy made him a would-be ally of Judah against Babylon; the fall of Jerusalem (587/586 BCE) occurred during his reign. A failed Libyan campaign provoked a revolt that brought his own general, Amasis, to the throne. He is identified with the biblical 'Pharaoh Hophra'; this cross-stream identification is a scholarly proposal.
