Dynasties 7-8 (the Memphite ephemeral kings)

2181 BCE2160 BCE · First-Intermediate

A summary entry for a rapid succession of short-lived Memphite kings at the dawn of the First Intermediate Period (Dynasties 7-8), known mainly from the Abydos king-list and the Turin Canon, many of them bearing the throne-name Neferkare in imitation of Pepi II. Few can be securely dated; Manetho's famous '70 kings in 70 days' is exaggeration rather than record. The best-attested standout is Qakare Ibi, who built a small pyramid at Saqqara.
