Menes
Menes
? · Undated
Menes is the traditional founder of unified Egypt and of Dynasty 1 as named by Manetho and the later king-lists, credited with uniting the two lands and founding the capital at Memphis. No object bearing the name 'Menes' has been securely tied to a single archaeologically-attested king; he may be the same ruler as Narmer or as Hor-Aha, or a composite founding figure. He is therefore kept as a separate, hedged node, and the foundation of the unified kingdom is best treated as part history and part founding tradition.
