Nitocris — disputed/legendary

Nitocris — disputed/legendary

? · Undated

Nitocris is named by the later writers Manetho and Herodotus as a queen who reigned at the close of Dynasty 6, and Herodotus preserves a dramatic tale of her revenge on those who killed her brother. Her historical existence is doubted: the king-list reading once cited in her support is now widely regarded as a possible misreading of a male royal name, Netjerkare. She is therefore best treated as legendary or disputed, apart from the women securely attested to have ruled Egypt. Herodotus's story is Greek legend, not Egyptian record.
