Pepi I (Meryre)
2321 BCE–2287 BCE · Old-Kingdom
Pepi I (throne-name Meryre) was a major king of Dynasty 6, conventionally dated to around 2321-2287 BCE, with a long and comparatively well-documented reign. His pyramid, named 'Mennefer-Pepi', eventually gave Memphis the name by which the city is known. The autobiography of his official Weni, inscribed in that official's tomb, records the events of the reign in unusual detail, including a conspiracy within the royal harem against the king. Weni's text is one of the most valuable contemporary sources for Old Kingdom administration and royal service.
