Senwosret I (Kheperkare)
1956 BCE–1911 BCE · Middle-Kingdom
Senwosret I (throne-name Kheperkare) was the second king of Dynasty 12, reigning around 1956-1911 BCE, a vigorous builder and campaigner. He erected the elegant White Chapel at Karnak and campaigned to extend Egyptian control in Nubia. It is during his reign that the protagonist of the Tale of Sinuhe returns home to Egypt. The 'Sesostris' of much later Greek legend is a composite that conflates him with Senwosret III.
