Shabaka (Neferkare)
716 BCE–702 BCE · Third-Intermediate
Shabaka was a Kushite king of Dynasty 25 in the Late Period who consolidated Kushite rule over all of Egypt, governing from Memphis. He is traditionally credited with preserving the 'Memphite Theology', a major religious text known from the so-called Shabaka Stone, whose inscription claims to copy a worm-eaten ancient papyrus; that claim, and the text's date, are both debated. The order of Shabaka and Shabataka has been revised: on the evidence of the Tang-i Var inscription, many specialists now place Shabataka before Shabaka.
