Shoshenq I (Hedjkheperre)

945 BCE924 BCE · Third-Intermediate · Tanis

Shoshenq I (throne-name Hedjkheperre) founded Dynasty 22, the Libyan dynasty, reigning around 945-924 BCE (Kitchen's conventional dates). Of Libyan descent, he reunified Egypt under a strong central hand after the fragmentation of Dynasty 21 and campaigned into the Levant; the Bubastite Portal he built at Karnak carries a list of towns said to have been taken. He is widely, though not certainly, identified with the biblical 'Shishak', who is said to have raided Judah in the reign of Rehoboam; the identification is broadly held but not secure, and the Karnak town-list does not unambiguously name Jerusalem. This cross-stream identification is offered as a scholarly proposal, widely discussed, rather than as an established fact.
