Smendes I (Nesbanebdjed)
1069 BCE–1043 BCE · Third-Intermediate
Smendes I (Egyptian Nesbanebdjed) founded Dynasty 21 and opened the Third Intermediate Period, reigning around 1069-1043 BCE (conventional dates). He ruled the north from Tanis in the Delta while the High Priests of Amun governed the south from Thebes, the divided arrangement that defines the period. The literary 'Report of Wenamun' is set at the dawn of this fragmented era.
