Elisha HaNavi
880 BCE–795 BCE · Biblical · Northern Kingdom (Samaria)
Elisha ben Shafat was a prophet of the Northern Kingdom of Israel during the 9th century BCE. He was called by Elijah while plowing his field and became the great prophet's devoted disciple and successor. After Elijah's miraculous ascent, Elisha inherited his mantle—literally and spiritually—and became the leading prophetic voice in Israel for nearly six decades. He was known for performing wonders and signs: raising the dead, healing the sick (including Naaman the Syrian), multiplying oil and bread, and revealing hidden counsel to the kings of Israel. Unlike his teacher's dramatic confrontations, Elisha often worked through quiet miraculous acts and counsel to multiple kings, earning him a reputation as both a wonder-worker and a political advisor deeply engaged with the affairs of state.
