Ewuare the Great reigned as Oba of the Kingdom of Benin, in present-day Nigeria, traditionally from about 1440 to 1473. He is credited with rebuilding and fortifying Benin City, reforming its government, and expanding the kingdom through a series of campaigns. His reign opened a golden age of court art, associated with the celebrated ivory carvings and cast-brass works produced for the royal palace. He remains one of the most renowned figures in the kingdom's history.
