Hanno

?

Hanno, often called Hanno the Navigator, was a Carthaginian who led a maritime expedition down the Atlantic coast of West Africa, probably in the 5th century BCE. He is known almost entirely through the Periplus, a short account of his voyage that survives in Greek (translated from a Punic original). It describes founding coastal colonies and encountering wildlife, volcanic activity, and hairy creatures called "gorillai." The precise extent of his journey and even his exact identity among several Carthaginian Hannos remain debated by scholars.
