Jude (also called Thaddaeus or Lebbaeus) was one of the Twelve Apostles, identified in Luke and Acts as "Judas son of James" and distinguished from Judas Iscariot. He is traditionally regarded as the brother of James and a relative of Jesus. His single recorded question to Jesus appears in the Gospel of John (14:22). The short Epistle of Jude in the New Testament is attributed to him by tradition, though many scholars associate it instead with Jude the brother of Jesus. He is venerated as a martyr, with the dominant Western tradition placing his death in Persia alongside the apostle Simon, while a distinct Armenian ecclesiastical tradition holds that he was martyred in Armenia by King Sanatrouk.

Jude was born and raised in Galilee; a later tradition names Paneas (Caesarea Philippi) as his specific birthplace, but this detail is purely legendary and has no documentary basis. His broader Galilean origin is consistent with the general profile of the Twelve.
Galilee, the hilly region of northern Israel around the Sea of Galilee. It was the principal setting of Jesus' public ministry and the home region of most of the apostles.
