K'ak' Joplaj Chan K'awiil (Smoke Monkey)

? · Copan

K'ak' Joplaj Chan K'awiil, 'Smoke Monkey,' became the fourteenth ruler of Copán in 738, in the difficult years after 18-Rabbit's capture had shaken the kingdom. Raising few grand monuments of his own, he built the council house known as the Popol Nah, whose sculpture suggests power was now shared among noble lineages. His reign reflects a chastened Copán adjusting to the loss of its former dominance.
