K'ak' Yipyaj Chan K'awiil, 'Smoke Shell,' was the fifteenth ruler of Copán, taking the throne in 749 and working to restore the prestige of his dynasty after earlier setbacks. He completed the great Hieroglyphic Stairway, whose more than two thousand carved glyphs make it the longest known Maya inscription in stone, recounting the deeds of Copán's kings. He also strengthened the dynasty through a royal marriage alliance with distant Palenque.
