Adapa
? · Eridu
Adapa is the model of human wisdom: a sage and priest of the god Ea at Eridu, counted among the apkallū, the Seven Sages said to have brought civilization before the Flood. In the Akkadian myth he breaks the wing of the South Wind, is summoned before the sky-god Anu, and — obeying his patron Ea's warning to refuse the food and drink offered — unwittingly rejects the bread and water of life, forfeiting immortality for himself and, the myth implies, for humankind. Whether Ea tested, tricked, or honestly misled him is left unresolved in the text and is debated by scholars.
