Pericles

Pericles was the leading statesman of Athens during its fifth-century BCE golden age, dominating the democracy for roughly three decades as a repeatedly elected general (strategos). He championed reforms that broadened citizen participation and directed the great building program on the Acropolis, including the Parthenon. He led Athens into the Peloponnesian War against Sparta and died of the plague that struck the crowded city in 429 BCE. His era is often called the 'Age of Pericles' for its lasting achievements in art, drama, and philosophy.
