Philostratus Minor
Philostratus Minor
?
Philostratus the Younger was a Greek sophist and rhetorician, a younger member of the celebrated Philostratus family of Lemnos that flourished under the Roman Empire, probably in the early-to-mid third century CE. He is remembered chiefly for his own collection of "Imagines" (Eikones), a set of rhetorical descriptions (ekphraseis) of paintings, composed in conscious imitation of an earlier "Imagines" by his maternal grandfather, the elder Philostratus. In its preface he explicitly presents himself as the grandson continuing that family tradition of describing works of art in elaborate prose.
