Scylax of Caryanda

Scylax of Caryanda

?

Scylax of Caryanda was a Greek explorer and writer from Caria in Asia Minor, active in the late 6th century BCE under the Persian king Darius I. According to Herodotus, Darius sent him to explore the Indus River and the sea route from India to the Red Sea, a voyage he reportedly completed. He is credited with an early account of his explorations, now lost. A surviving periplus (coastal navigation guide) bearing his name dates from a much later period and is not genuinely his work, but a Hellenistic-era compilation attributed to him.
