Tiberius Rhetor

Tiberius Rhetor

?

Tiberius, often called "the rhetor" or "the sophist," was a Greek rhetorician known for the surviving treatise "On the Figures of Speech in Demosthenes" (De figuris Demosthenicis), a technical handbook analyzing the stylistic and rhetorical figures employed by the great Athenian orator. Little is securely known about his life, and his date is genuinely uncertain; scholars place him somewhere in the imperial Roman period, perhaps around the 3rd or 4th century CE, within the tradition of Greek rhetorical teaching and Demosthenic scholarship. He is otherwise a shadowy figure attested mainly through this one work.
