Tryphon II Grammaticus
Tryphon II Grammaticus
?
"Tryphon II" is the conventional scholarly name for the author of a Greek treatise De tropis (On Tropes), a short handbook of rhetorical figures and figurative language transmitted in the grammatical tradition. The work was at times circulated under the name of the Byzantine grammarian Gregory of Corinth before being assigned to a "Tryphon." His date and identity are genuinely uncertain: he is distinguished by the numeral "II" from the well-attested Augustan Alexandrian grammarian Tryphon, and may belong to a considerably later period. Little can be said about him with confidence beyond his association with this single technical treatise.
