Yik'in Chan K'awiil, 'Ruler B,' succeeded his father Jasaw Chan K'awiil I on the Tikal throne in 734 and became one of the city's most successful war-kings. He defeated Calakmul again in 736 and subdued its allies El Perú and Naranjo, cementing Tikal's supremacy. He commissioned Temple IV, the tallest pyramid at Tikal and one of the tallest structures in the ancient Americas, crowning the city's Late Classic golden age.
