Pre-dawn liturgical poems sung in Sephardi communities, especially Aleppo and Jerusalem, on winter Shabbat nights as a prelude to Shacharit.
The Syrian-Aleppo Sephardi pre-dawn Shabbat winter custom of singing piyutim from after-midnight through Shacharit. Composed primarily by R. Yisrael Najara (Damascus, 16c.) and other Sephardi piyutic masters; revived in 19c. by R. Mordechai Abadi and others. Universal in Aleppine-Syrian communities; preserved in Brooklyn Syrian community today.
