The Jesus Prayer
Five words, endlessly breathed: Lord Jesus Christ, have mercy on me
The Jesus Prayer is the repeated invocation, Lord Jesus Christ, Son of God, have mercy on me, offered as a path toward unceasing prayer. Its roots lie in the desert monastic tradition, and it is movingly portrayed in the classic account The Way of a Pilgrim. Especially treasured in Eastern Christianity, it seeks to unite mind and heart by dwelling continually on the name of Jesus.
