Palm Sunday / Blessing of Palms

Branches waved and blessed, the crowd's welcome to Christ entering Jerusalem

Palm Sunday opens Holy Week, recalling Christ's entry into Jerusalem greeted with branches. The pilgrim Egeria describes a palm procession on the Mount of Olives around 380. Today Catholic, Orthodox, Oriental, Anglican, and Lutheran communities all keep the day, blessing branches and carrying them in procession; the greenery varies by region, with palm, willow, or pussy-willow used where palms do not grow.
