Egyptians told of a fierce solar goddess, the 'Eye of Ra,' who in anger leaves Egypt for a faraway land. A god (often Thoth) is sent to soothe her and coax her back; her return, calmed from lioness to gentle goddess, renews the land and was celebrated in festival.
