The cakras are 'wheels' — focal centers of the subtle body strung along the spine's central channel, from its base to the crown of the head. Tantric and haṭha-yoga map them as way-stations on the inner journey: as the coiled energy rises, it pierces each in turn, and the yogin's awareness is transformed at each stage. They are not anatomical organs but features of the subtle body's energetic geography. The familiar set of major centers belongs to specific tantric lineages, not to a single fixed canon.
