The Contendings of Horus & Seth

Gods bickering in a courtroom over who gets the throne — with tricks, contests, and comedy.

Also: Contendings of Horus and Seth · Horus and Seth · Horus vs Seth · Chester Beatty I · succession of the gods

Egyptians told of a long dispute between Horus, the rightful heir of the murdered Osiris, and his uncle Seth, over who should rule Egypt. The gods sit as a court and weigh the claims through a series of contests and tricks before Horus is finally awarded the throne. One vivid New Kingdom version, 'The Contendings of Horus and Seth,' treats the gods with surprising irreverence and humor.

In short

The mythic conflict over the kingship of Egypt between Horus, son and heir of Osiris, and Seth, in which a tribunal of gods adjudicates the rightful succession — preserved most fully in a Ramesside literary tale.

Where it’s found

The Contendings of Horus and Seth (Papyrus Chester Beatty I, Dyn. 20); earlier allusions in the Pyramid Texts

How the idea developed across Egypt

The succession conflict is rooted in the Osiris cycle and old kingship ideology; the celebrated literary narrative 'The Contendings of Horus and Seth' survives in a Ramesside manuscript (Papyrus Chester Beatty I, Dyn. 20).

A note on the history

Horus and Seth are deities. The Ramesside tale is a literary composition, not a liturgical 'official' theology — keep the playful literary version distinct from cultic statements.
