Isfet — Chaos & Disorder
The chaos at the edge of the world that order must hold back every single day.
Also: Isfet · Izfet · chaos · disorder · falsehood
Egyptians paired ma'at (order) with isfet, its opposite: chaos, falsehood, violence, and wrong. Creation did not destroy chaos once and for all; it pushed it to the edges, and it always pressed back. The king's wars, the sun's nightly battle against the serpent Apophis, and a person's honest conduct were all understood as holding isfet at bay.
In short
Disorder, falsehood, injustice, and chaos — the counter-force to ma'at that the created order must continually hold back.
Where it’s found
Attested from the Old Kingdom onward, paired with ma'at across funerary and wisdom texts

How the idea developed across Egypt
Conceptually inseparable from ma'at and attested wherever ma'at is, from the Old Kingdom onward; vividly dramatized in New Kingdom solar theology (the nightly defeat of Apophis).
