Seed-Principles
The cosmos carries fiery "seed-principles" within it — rational germ-codes that shape raw matter into every ordered thing.
The Stoics, particularly thinkers like Chrysippus, conceived of the logos spermatikos as generative rational principles embedded throughout the cosmos. These seed-principles were divine reason itself, compressed and distributed through matter, acting as blueprints for how things develop and unfold. The universal Logos, or divine intelligence, worked through these seminal reasons to organize the material world and guide all creation toward its proper forms and functions.
These principles operated with necessity and consistency, always producing effects homogeneous with their sources. A seed-principle governing an oak tree, for instance, would reliably generate the specific structure and nature proper to oaks, unfolding its predetermined pattern across defined periods of time. For the Stoics, this meant the cosmos was rationally ordered at every level, with nothing random or chaotic—even matter itself was penetrated and shaped by divine reason working through these invisible generative forces.
