The emperor said to have broken Alexander's nose
After defeating Antony and Cleopatra in 30 BCE, the future emperor Augustus had the tomb of Alexander the Great opened in Alexandria to view the preserved body in person. Suetonius records that Augustus gazed on the body and placed a golden crown upon it. Cassius Dio adds that when Augustus touched the body, a piece of the nose broke off — though Dio himself flags it as hearsay: "it is said," not an eyewitness report.
How we know
Octavian/Augustus entered Alexandria 30 BCE; Suetonius (Augustus 18) records he viewed and placed a golden crown on Alexander's body; Cassius Dio (51.16), primary text via Lacus Curtius: "he viewed the body of Alexander and actually touched it, whereupon, it is said, a piece of the nose was broken off."
