Mind-Benders of Ancient Egyptian History
Woolly mammoths were still alive after the Great Pyramid was built
When Khufu's builders finished the Great Pyramid of Giza around 2560 BCE, woolly mammoths were not yet extinct. A small population survived on remote Wrangel Island in the Arctic Ocean until roughly 4,000 years ago — meaning the last mammoths were still walking the Earth for centuries after the pyramids of Giza already stood.
How we know
The Great Pyramid of Khufu was completed c.2560 BCE. Woolly mammoths survived on Wrangel Island until roughly 4,000 years ago (c.2000 BCE) — at least ~560 years after the pyramid was finished.
