The monk who traveled from Beijing to Bordeaux

Rabban Bar Sauma, a Church of the East monk born near present-day Beijing, made the reverse of Marco Polo's trip: he crossed all of Asia to Europe, spending a month at the Paris court of Philip IV, meeting England's Edward I at Bordeaux, and receiving communion from the pope in Rome in 1288.

How we know

Bar Sauma b. c.1220 in Zhongdu (modern Beijing); traveled west as envoy of the Ilkhan Arghun 1287-1288; met Philip IV (r. from 1285) in Paris and Edward I (r. 1272-1307) at Bordeaux/Gascony; received by Pope Nicholas IV, Palm Sunday 1288 (Wikipedia; National Geographic; Encyclopedia.com — 'the reverse Marco Polo'). Note: the city of his birth was called Zhongdu under the Jin dynasty in 1220; the Mongol name Khanbaliq was not applied until Kublai Khan established his capital there in the 1260s.
