The British Egyptologist Percy Newberry, a pioneer of the Egypt Exploration Fund who catalogued the botanical finds from Tutankhamun's tomb, died in 1949.

Rabbi Adin Even-Israel Steinsaltz, whose modern Hebrew and English editions opened the Babylonian Talmud to a wide readership, died in Jerusalem.
