Urban V (Guillaume de Grimoard), the only Avignon pope to be beatified, died at Avignon shortly after returning from Rome.

The German Lutheran theologian Andreas Osiander, who later prepared the first printed edition of Copernicus's De revolutionibus, was born at Gunzenhausen.
