Algiers

Algeria

Algiers (al-Jaza'ir), the port-capital on the Mediterranean coast of present-day Algeria, was founded in its Islamic form in the 10th century and became a major centre of the Ottoman Maghrib from the 16th century. The Algerian emir and Sufi scholar Abd al-Qadir al-Jaza'iri (d. 1883) takes his nisba from the country of which Algiers is the capital.
