al-Balqa (Salt)

Al-Balqa was a district of Bilad al-Sham east of the Jordan, around modern Salt in west-central Jordan. It lay on the route of early Muslim expeditions toward Byzantine Syria; the campaign of the young commander Usama ibn Zayd, dispatched by the Prophet shortly before his death and carried out under Abu Bakr in 632, was directed toward the Balqa region.
