Bern, the capital of Switzerland, had a medieval Jewish community that suffered persecution, including a blood-libel accusation in 1294, in the wake of which Jews were maltreated, fined, and driven from the town. Jewish life later returned in the modern era, and Bern became home to an organized community within Swiss Jewry.
