Gilan
Gilan is a region on the southwestern shore of the Caspian Sea in northern Iran. It is the home region of the Sufi master and Hanbali preacher Abd al-Qadir al-Jilani (d. 1166), eponym of the Qadiriyya, the most widespread of all Sufi orders; he was born in the Jilan district before going to Baghdad, where he taught and is buried, and took his nisba al-Jilani from the region.
