Hama
Hama (classical Epiphania), on the Orontes in west-central Syria, is famous for its great water-wheels (norias) and was an important town of Bilad al-Sham. The Shafi'i theologian and legal theorist Sayf al-Din al-Amidi (d. 1233), a leading figure of kalam and usul al-fiqh, is connected to the region; he taught in Syria and Egypt and died in Damascus.
