Mardin
Mardin, in southeastern Turkey, is a hill-top town of the Jazira overlooking the Mesopotamian plain, capital of the Artuqid principality in the 12th-13th centuries. The Illuminationist philosopher al-Suhrawardi al-Maqtul (executed 1191) studied for a period at Mardin under Fakhr al-Din al-Mardini before moving on toward Aleppo.
