Mascara

Mascara (al-Mu'askar, 'the camp'), in the highlands of northwestern Algeria, was an Ottoman provincial garrison-town and became the early capital and base of the Algerian resistance leader and Sufi scholar Abd al-Qadir al-Jaza'iri (d. 1883) in his war against the French conquest from 1832.
