Sicily

Messina, a port city in Sicily (then under the Crown of Aragon), had a Jewish community in the medieval period until the expulsion of Jews from Sicily in 1492. The kabbalist Rabbi Abraham Abulafia, founder of 'prophetic' or ecstatic Kabbalah, settled in the Messina region of Sicily from about 1281 and taught his system there for roughly a decade.
