Nawa (Hawran)

Nawa, in the Hawran plain of southern Syria (Daraa region), is a town south of Damascus. It is the birthplace of the Shafi'i jurist and hadith scholar al-Nawawi (d. 1277), one of the most widely read authorities of the school, author of the Forty Hadith, the Riyad al-Salihin, and the commentary on Sahih Muslim; he took his nisba from Nawa.
