Okopy (Okop), a village in Podolia on the historic Polish-Wallachian frontier (today in western Ukraine), is traditionally identified as the birthplace, in 1698, of Rabbi Israel ben Eliezer, the Baal Shem Tov, founder of the chasidic movement.
